NEW MULTISTORY PASSIVE BUILDING IN CHALANDRI, ATHENS

Architectural design of a “passive house” of 8 residences(2021-2022)

This is the first “passive house” multistory new residential structure to be licensed for construction in Athens. It comprises 3 duplex units and 5 apartments of various sizes. The building is designed -since the initial stage- according to the passive house criteria and is classified in the energy category “Passive House Plus”. Its compactness and careful orientation lead to a ratio of external envelope surface to heated surface that is very close to the area of 2:1. Consumptions are considered for an ideal thermal comfort of 20-25 degrees C (ISO 7730), and 35%-55% relative internal humidity, calculated using the PHPP (Passive House Planning Package) software. The high thermal sun and interior gains are being counteracted by appropriate shading and ventilation; the interior air is 100% renewed every 3 hours. Every apartment is served by autonomous passive house certified ventilation systems with heat recovery, with electrical consumption lower than 0,45 Wh/m3 and noise lower than 25dB(A). Heating period is limited to 2,5 months and is 2,5-3,5 kWh/m2 per month; 12W/m2 heating load is needed to cover all needs. Active cooling load of 11,3W/m2 is needed for the summer months and 5,6W/m2 dehumidification load. Due to its passive house design, the overall demand of the entire building in final electric energy is limited to 26.600kWh per year for an active of 365 days.

Total building area with basement: 1.350 m2, Plot area: 600 m2
